Editors can use the standards to judge the comprehensiveness of their
own knowledge and skills, and to show clients the extent of their
professional services.
The standards were the first step towards the IPEd national accreditation system and form the basis of the accreditation exam.
The standards were structured as a set of principles, not as tasks,
so that they would stand the test of time and accommodate the new
technologies that continue to emerge, an approach vindicated by their
currency after 10 years.
Educational institutions use the standards as the basis for editing
programs and courses. The standards, ratified and released in 2001 by
IPEd’s forerunner, the Council of Australian Societies of Editors
(CASE), were devised by the Standards Working Group comprising
representatives from all member societies.
IPEd is currently revising the standards.
