The Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) has been awarded chartered status by Her Majesty the Queen.

London-based CIEP was formerly the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), which was established in 1988. CIEP was awarded a Royal Charter in recognition of its commitment to excellent standards and training in editing and proofreading.

The new Institute aims to ensure the public has access to a reliable source of professional editors and proofreaders and to provide editors and proofreaders with professional training and ongoing support to conduct their jobs well.

A regulated membership body, CIEP has more than 3000 members in the UK and beyond, and a free directory to search for reliable editorial professionals.

Hugh Jackson, CIEP’s professional standards director, said: ‘CIEP will be even more ambitious in its pursuit of high standards of editing knowledge and professional practice. We will continue to help members develop their skills and provide better services to their clients. Our membership structure – which rewards experience, training and professionalism and is reinforced by a rigorous and expanding testing system – will ensure members remain among the best trained, most respected editors in the world.’

Sue Browning, CIEP’s membership director, said: ‘This is a great achievement for the Institute and its members, who work tirelessly to provide professional editing services. We look forward to welcoming new members who would like to join us in 2020 as we enter an exciting new era.’

Jane Moody, training director, said: ‘Our broad range of training courses cater for complete beginners to experienced professionals, covering the core skills of copyediting and proofreading as well as more specialised areas, such as medical editing, references and editorial project management. We are developing a curriculum for editorial professionals to support training, development and raising standards across the profession and will continue to expand the variety and depth of courses for members and non-members alike.’

CIEP is a non-profit body promoting excellence in English language editing. It sets and demonstrates editorial standards and is a community, training hub and support network for editorial professionals – the people who work to make text accurate, clear and fit for purpose.

CIEP aims to be:

  • a recognised authority on editing and proofreading in English
  • a supportive community for editorial professionals who are working to high standards
  • a trusted source of advice, information, best practice, training and qualifications
  • the place to find professional editorial services.

CIEP has about 3200 individual members, of whom 460 are based overseas, 50 in Australia and New Zealand.

IPEd has established the Editors Directory. Clients can search the directory for freelance editors using specific criteria. These will identify editors that have specific interests, skills or experience in certain areas.
