Most recently I have served as Branch President of Editors SA and have previously been a member of the branch committee, chaired the Editors SA communications subcommittee and been the SA representative on the IPEd Communications Standing Committee.

CEO Karen Lee reports on IPEd’s submission to senate inquiry

Welcome to the October issue of Gatherings.
During September, IPEd made a submission to the Senate Standing Committees on Education and Employment, which is inquiring into the Higher Education Support Amendment (Job-Ready Graduates and Supporting Regional and Remote Students) Bill 2020.

Tasmanian conference update 

Submissions for conference presentations reveal that members have a wide range of interests: working with the IPEd code of ethics, creating accessible books, editing fantasy languages (as found in works as diverse as Lord of the Rings or Star Trek) and planning for the unplanned are just a few of the topics suggested. 

Deterring academic cheating services — legislation passed
The Federal Government’s Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Amendment (Prohibiting Academic Cheating Services) Bill 2019, released for stakeholder comment in early 2019, formally became law on 3 September 2020.

Discount on The Subversive Copy Editor
IPEd members can now receive a 30 per cent discount on the second edition of The Subversive Copy Editor by Carol Saller. To get the discount, log in to the member portal and go to ‘Member discounts’. 

‘NAPLAN generation’ could provide more work for editors
The Conversation has published two articles focusing on the education shortfalls that stem from the high-pressure National Assessment Program — Literacy And Numeracy (NAPLAN) test. 

Western Australia Publishing profile: UWA Publishing
In November 2019, the University of Western Australia made an announcement that shook the WA literary community: it would be closing UWA Publishing (UWAP) in its ‘current form’ to replace it with an open-source digital publishing model. 

Vale Barbara Ker Wilson AM 

24 September 1929 to 10 September 2020
Barbara Ker Wilson, a founding member of the Society of Editors (Qld), passed away peacefully on 10 September.

Inclusive publishing explored
IPEd member Dr Joely Taylor AE has written a blog post published by Well Writ, Inclusive and accessible publishing, which focuses on the meaning and importance of inclusive publishing.

AMOSS expands into AMOS
Andina Faragher, science writer and a Chief Editor of AMOS at Biotext (who has a PhD in molecular biology, background in science administration), spoke to the Editors NSW September 2020 meeting on how Biotext and Macquarie University are expanding their Australian manual of scientific style (AMOSS) as the Australian manual of style (AMOS).

IPEd has established the Editors Directory. Clients can search the directory for freelance editors using specific criteria. These will identify editors that have specific interests, skills or experience in certain areas.
