AIPI August Communique

The Australian Inclusive Publishing Initiative (AIPI), supported by publishers, booksellers, authors, editors, libraries and disability groups, has made further progress in promoting an “accessible by default” approach to book production in Australia. Since the annual AIPI meeting in Sydney in November 2017:

  • Consultation about draft protocols for implementing the Marrakesh Treaty has taken place at the Round Table on Information Access for People with Print Disabilities.
  • Draft disability access copyright guidelines have been produced for final comment and endorsement by the AIPI members, and a plain English guide to accessibility standards is underway.
  • Read How you Want has developed three online skills courses:
    • Accessible Document Preparation for Editors
    • Accessible Document Preparation for Publishing Production Teams
    • Educating Professionals in the Effective Use of Accessible Formats

The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in embedding accessibility into the publishing workflow has been investigated, as has the use of the Australian Publishers Association’s TitlePage platform and the National Library of Australia’s Trove, to develop metadata repositories for commercial and non- commercial titles.

The next meeting of AIPI will be in Sydney, on 2 November 2018.
