The 2014 IPEd Prize winner has been announced

Brenda Gurr has been announced as the 2014 IPEd Prize winner for her essay, Breaking the rules: editing with prescription and description. This was written as part of a Graduate Certificate in Editing and Publishing at the University of Southern Queensland.

The essay, in the style of a blog post, puts forward the view that editors should use both prescriptive and descriptive approaches to language in their work.

It discusses aspects of the history of English grammar and the problems with enforcing grammatical rules, as well as considering the relevance of teaching grammar to today’s school students.

The judges’ comments included:

  • highly engaging
  • accessible and interesting
  • sensitive discussion of editorial balance
  • informal, rather breezy prose is attractive
  • entertaining writing

Brenda Gurr’s prize winning essay is available for members to read.
