IPEd receives Copyright Agency grant

Posted on: 26 January 2018

IPEd has been successful in grant funding to support the work of the Professional Development and Academic Editing standing committees, and in developing university and public education campaigns, with $26,500 granted over a two-year period.

IPEd’s project (Educating editors and their authors – inside and out) supports innovative ways of enhancing the profession and educating industry by

  1. developing a national online professional development program for members and non-members
  2. revising the current thesis editing guidelines
  3. developing resources about the editor’s role, including in academic publishing
  4. equipping members as IPEd ambassadors to give presentations to universities, libraries, writers centres and writers festivals.

Online professional development (PD) is essential to ensure access for all our members, including those in regional areas and those with disability. The existing PD program offered at branch level will be enhanced and expanded to include topics suggested by our biennial national survey.

Misunderstanding of the role of editors and their services is rife among higher degree research students and their supervisors. The guidelines, and the ethics and practices that underpin them, require thorough analysis and revision to counter this problem. The guidelines also need to be promoted to students and supervisors. Equipping a cohort of our members as IPEd ambassadors to give presentations at universities across Australia will help to achieve this.

Similarly, we aim to provide information to authors and potential authors about the services editors offer. Libraries and writers centres are host to numerous writers groups and offer a ready audience, as do writers festivals, for presentations to dispel misconceptions and give advice on the role that editors play in the publication process.

IPEd acknowledges the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund for supporting this project.

IPEd has established the Editors Directory. Clients can search the directory for freelance editors using specific criteria. These will identify editors that have specific interests, skills or experience in certain areas.
