Accreditation exam

The next accreditation exam will be held on Saturday 19 May in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra.

Registration for the 2018 accreditation exam is now open

Australian editors can gain formal recognition of their skills and competence during 2018 with the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd) once again offering its accreditation exam.

This year, the accreditation exam will be held on Saturday 19 May in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and, subject to demand, Hobart, and will be offered in an onscreen format.

The three-hour, open-book exam assesses candidates’ knowledge and use of the Australian standards for editing practice, and tests a wide variety of editorial skills – including:

  • structural editing and copyediting

  • permission and copyright issues

  • the ability to identify defamation

  • project management.

Candidates who pass the exam are certified by the IPEd Accreditation Board as capable of applying the editorial skills described in the Standards, and can use the postnominal AE for ‘accredited editor’. Prospective employers and clients in the Australian business, government, education and publishing sectors recognise that ‘AE’ is a reliable indicator of competence.

“Editing has long been seen as an invisible profession. But that's changing. Employers and clients are increasingly seeking Accredited Editors to whom they can entrust their editing work. The AE postnominal informs the world that editing is a valued profession, and is no longer in hiding,” says Accreditation Board Chair Desolie Page.

Registration for the exam is open to anyone but it is recommended for suitably qualified editors with at least three years’ full-time editing experience or equivalent.

Early bird registration for the exam is now open and closes on Thursday 5 April 2018.
