The sample exam is a very good indicator of what you can expect in September, and trialling it under simulated exam conditions will help you decide whether you are ready. As has been stated throughout, an editor with two to three years' full-time editing experience should be able to pass the exam. All societies will be organising pre-exam workshops and other activities to help prepare candidates.
