From the committee

By Paul Anderson and Russell Noakes

The EdNSW committee met on 14 June for its latest meeting via Zoom, with one apology.

Minutes of the April committee meeting were accepted and actions from previous meetings reviewed.

Written reports received included:

  • Accreditation Board delegate
  • branch financial report for March 2022
  • branch presidents’ meeting representative
  • budget commentary with financial outcomes to end April and preliminary estimates for May 2022
  • draft branch budget for 2022–23 and budget assumptions
  • membership
  • mentoring
  • networking
  • speaker presentations.

Our annual branch meeting (ABM) is on 2 August 2022. A call for committee nominations will be emailed to all branch members in June. We will hold a fun quiz after the close of the ABM, as part of a social meeting.

Our speaker presentation in June on “Copyright aspects of online presenting and training” attracted 45 registrants. As well as the basics of copyright law, the talk included information on using Creative Commons’ (“free use”) material from the internet.

Our next speaker presentation is on 6 September. Aditya Vasudevan from Arts Law will present on “Defamation law for editors”.

Regional editors’ lunch events took place in Wollongong and Hornsby. The next is aimed at editors in the Central West and will be in Bathurst on 22 July. Please contact Olivia Wroth at ednsw.networking@iped-editors.org if you are interested in attending or organising a lunch event.

Cheers to the 10 members who attended our drinks night at the Edinburgh Castle Hotel in Sydney on 17 May. These events are good networking opportunities, particularly for new and emerging editors, and a way to get to know your committee. We plan another when spring is finally here. In the meantime, our winter dinner will be on 19 July, at Diethnes Restaurant in Sydney. Please check your email for the invitation sent and contact Susie Pilkington at ednsw.admin@iped-editors.org if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing those members who are able to attend.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Beach, our mentoring coordinator and committee member. Elizabeth has been appointed as the new chair of IPEd’s mentoring program standing committee.

The branch received two new applications from mentees, and currently has four active mentorships.

The draft branch budget for 2022–23 was accepted, with changes agreed to some of the underlying assumptions.

We have revised the monthly committee meetings schedule. We plan to meet (online) 11 times next financial year, excluding December, and each meeting will be no longer than 90 minutes.

The next committee meeting is scheduled for 12 July 2022.
