In a happy coincidence, mentoring is the theme of this month’s newsletter. Our feature story explores the benefits of being a mentor for the IPEd Mentoring Program.
We also speak with the 2024 Open Book interns and delve into the story of Open Book and its goal of a more culturally diverse publishing industry.
We have a fantastic list of Aotearoa New Zealand resources to add to your editing toolkit. Speaking of toolkits – have you ever considered adding indexing to yours? We hear from two editors who also index thanks to the Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers (ANZSI).
Plus we have updates from the Working Party on Artificial Intelligence (WPAI), news on nominations for the 2025 Rosie Award and event reports. And if you’re preparing for the accreditation exam, don’t miss the list of thoughtful and helpful tips compiled by the Accreditation Board.
While we’re on the topic of accreditation – it’s renewal time! If you passed the accreditation exam in 2009 or 2014, it’s time to renew your accreditation. Applications for renewal are open from 1 May to 31 July. If you are in either of these cohorts and have not yet received an email about your renewal, please contact Charlotte Cottier AE at ab.chair@iped-editors.org.

The benefits of being mentored are obvious. But what about the benefits of being a mentor? We spoke with Elizabeth Beach AE, chair of the IPEd Mentoring Program and Sally Asnicar, IPEd member and mentor, to learn more about what’s involved in being a mentor and how rewarding it can be.
We’ve collated some fantastic Aotearoa New Zealand resources covering language, accessibility and copyright plus some dictionaries and style guides too. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been editing for years, there’s bound to be something helpful in this list.
If you are a candidate the accreditation exam, you have probably been honing your editing skills with revision, workshops, study buddies, studying your chosen style manual and even mentoring.
Here are some tips to prepare yourself for exam day.

We caught up with Open Book administrator, Rebecca Slater and the 2024 interns, Nashin Mahee, Tayla Goodman and Olivia Garcia, to chat about all things Open Book.
Editors, especially freelance ones, can attract more work if they add related skills to their portfolios. Indexing is a natural fit for those who mainly work on nonfiction books or reports, whether in print or online.
Nominations for the 2025 Rosanne Fitzgibbon Editorial Award will open on 1 August 2024.
The Rosie recognises editorial excellence, as demonstrated in one published work, with testimony from the work’s author, publisher and editor.
In May 2024, Karen Workman of Copyright Licensing New Zealand (CLNZ) joined us to talk about Aotearoa New Zealand copyright for editors. For IPEd, Deborah Shaw AE reports on Karen’s presentation.
In June 2024, Camilla Cripps delivered a presentation on editing trauma in the Australian context. For IPEd, Kerry Anderson reports on Camilla’s presentation and her insights into how editors can work sensitively with authors while also caring for themselves.
