From Editors Western Australia
On Sunday 13 October 2024, IPEd representatives from Editors WA presented a workshop, titled ”Working with an editor”, to aspiring authors at the Katharine Susannah Prichard (KSP) Writers’ Centre.
Demystifying the editorial process for writers, the workshop also provided an opportunity for Editors WA to promote IPEd, the Editors Directory and what IPEd can offer those seeking to work with an editor.
Over two hours, writers learned what to expect during the editorial process; how to work with an in-house editor at a publisher; and how to work with freelance editors, should they decide to go down the self-publishing road. Also covered was how editors may provide feedback, using examples of feedback received in manuscripts, reports and informal conversation.
Attendees appreciated the insights and tips to ensure smooth collaboration and were not short of questions! While professional editing may seem straightforward and natural to fiction writers, it can be a misunderstood process for writers of other genres.
Overall, this workshop was successful in teaching aspiring authors the ins and outs of the editorial process and in advocating the editing profession to those who will benefit from it the most.
A massive thank you to KSP Writers’ Centre for giving Editors WA the platform to help bridge the already intertwined worlds of creative writing and editing in WA.
