Kia ora,
Are you booked in for the accreditation exam workshops? I’m booked in for the second series, which starts in late August. Editors I know who booked for the first series of workshops have been excited about the content and the opportunity to ask lots of questions. The exam will be in December and the workshops are an excellent way to help you focus on what you need to study.
This is the first time the workshops have been held online. The changes brought about by a world living with COVID-19 have fast-tracked our intentions to hold more training sessions online. I’m relieved I didn’t have to pay for accommodation and flights to Wellington for the workshops. I’m also grateful for the work put in by the Accreditation Board members that allows me to take this excellent workshop at home.
What about our newer editors? Those who are not ready for the accreditation exam? Something we have picked up in our Zoom catch-ups over the last few months is the need for resources for people new to the profession. In early August, we will hold an online Q&A session for people who have just qualified or who are thinking about pursuing a career in editing.
This is their chance to pick the brains of experienced, established editors — the sort of advice and information we all needed when we were starting out. This session will be recorded and made available for later purchase so other new editors can benefit from the information. Next time someone says they are thinking of becoming an editor and asks what you would recommend, tell them to book the session or buy the recording.
I look forward to seeing some of you in the accreditation exam workshops and some of you in the new editors’ Q&A session. And if neither of those applies to you, there will be something coming for you soon. Keep an eye out for our next professional development sessions.

Do you want to become an editor? Are you thinking of turning your love of language into an editing career, or know someone who is? Just qualified as an editor, but wondering how to proceed?
New and wannabe editors in Aotearoa New Zealand are invited to join our panel of experienced editors as they answer your questions via Zoom about working as an editor and give you the benefit of their collective years of experience. Please email your questions before Wednesday 5 August 2020 to edanz.events@iped-editors.org so we can make the most of the session for you. The Zoom link will be emailed to you the day before the event.
Panellists
Susi Bailey: Susi has been an editor for more than 30 years, working both in-house and as a freelancer in all areas of non-fiction, academic and business publishing. She is currently the Training Coordinator for EdANZ.
Helen Bradford: Helen is the EdANZ representative on the IPEd Accreditation Board. Helen set up her editing business in 2018.
Joan Gladwyn: Joan started her career as a scientist and switched to (mostly) academic and scientific editing just four years ago.
Judy L Mohr: Judy is a writer, a developmental editor and a science nerd with a keen interest in internet technologies and social media security. Her knowledge ranges from highly efficient ways to hide the bodies to how to improve your SEO rankings for your websites.
Odessa Owens: Odessa worked at Te Papa Press for a decade before becoming a tutor of the Whitireia Graduate Diploma in Publishing in 2015. She has been a judge for both the PANZ Book Design Awards (2016) and the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards (2020).
