From the president

Happy new year! I sincerely hope you all had a wonderful break over the holidays and managed to relax and recharge your batteries. We are certainly being tested at the moment with record COVID-19 numbers in SA (and other states) and a lot of uncertainty around restrictions, interacting socially, schools and even feeling comfortable doing everyday things, like grabbing a coffee or going to the supermarket. It’s more important than ever to practice self-care and kindness (to ourselves and others).

While we are grateful we could meet in person at our end-of-year drinks and our end-of-year picnic, the Editors SA committee has needed to do some quick rethinking on our plans for the start of this year. Our annual strategic planning day has been postponed and we return to Zoom meetings exclusively for the foreseeable future. While this is disappointing, we remain confident that we will be able continue to support our members and work with IPEd and our fellow branches. If anything, the expansion of online meetings has brought us all closer together and more in tune with how other branches work and how we can better work together.

I want to share this article from ACES on mindful editing. It’s a nice reminder of how important it is to focus on the things in our world we can control, and the tips in this article offer some meaningful ways to calm our worries and anxieties. I am sure many of you are already pros at this, but I found some of the reminders helpful. I particularly like the idea of setting an intention for your day, and not judging yourself if you don’t always achieve it.

I hope you are all safe and happy, and we look forward to sharing our plans and events for 2022 in the near future.
