CEO Karen Lee reveals strategic plan
Welcome to the August issue of Gatherings.
It is another issue filled with varied information of interest across the membership. Thanks to the volunteers who provide content to ensure an excellent issue every month.
IPEd Strategic Plan
IPEd’s Board has finalised the Strategic Plan for F20–F23. We’ve produced a summary document outlining the key features. The plan is reviewed every year and updated. IPEd’s focus over the next three years continues to build on the work over the life of the previous strategic plan. There is still so much to do. Our vision for IPEd as the trusted voice of professional editors, shaping communications of the future, continues to guide the focus of our work.
The four pillars of the plan are to:
- build a strong organisation
- support a thriving membership
- deliver integrated professional development
- promote IPEd as the trusted voice of the profession.
Speaker grant for 2021 Tasmanian conference
IPEd has been successful in gaining a $5000 grant from the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund to assist in providing speakers’ fees for Editing on the edges, the 10th IPEd Editors Conference.
Editing on the edges will present an interesting and eclectic program, aimed at raising awareness of the need for editors wherever we find the written word, and highlighting some of the challenges faced by individuals and groups who are on the edges in a variety of ways.
The conference will run from 28 to 30 June 2021.
The draft program includes keynote speeches from:
- Graeme Innes AM, Chair of the Attitude Foundation
- Lisa-ann Gershwin, a popular science writer who is active in disability awareness
- Pam Allen, an accredited translator
- Greg Lehman, a Tasmanian Aboriginal historian and commentator.
IPEd patron Roly Sussex OAM will chair a panel on the role of editors in meeting the needs of people with low literacy.
The call for papers seeks speakers and workshop presenters who can discuss some of the edges that editors deal with — some every day, others only occasionally. Papers will examine demographic and geographic edges, technological and ethical edges, and economic and educational edges. Read more about the conference.

Ambassador program
IPEd’s Ambassador program was developed by the Professional Development and Academic Editing standing committees to enhance the editing profession and educate industry about the role of editors in the publishing process.
A reminder to Ambassadors, we would love as many of you as possible to get out there and spread the word about what editors do.

CWP website transition
The Communications Working Party (CWP) is making good progress with the transition of information from existing branch websites to the IPEd website.
There are four steps to the transition:
- updating the IPEd website with information branches want to retain
- updating MemNet with archived branch newsletters
- updating the National eDeposit/Trove with archive newsletters (branch representatives are doing this themselves)
- updating the IPEd website with any other material branches would like to transition from their own websites that will be useful for the entire membership base.
The project will be completed within the next few months.
