IPEd

From the committee

By Elisabeth Thomas

The final meeting of the 2023–24 Editors NSW committee was held on 9 July 2024. Unsurprisingly much of it was taken up with administrative business. Preparations for the ABM are being finalised and the various tasks related to committee positions, especially at the end of a committee year, are in progress. Thanks go to Camilla Cripps who has had to leave the committee, and we thank Marita Smith AE for taking up the role of secretary. Nevertheless, planning for, and work on, events and the other jobs of the committee heading into 2024–25 continues. On a more enjoyable note, the committee heard that the mid-year dinner held on 2 July was a most pleasant occasion. (Report below.)

All members of the committee are thanked, on behalf of Editors NSW branch members, for their hard work over the past year. Several of those on the committee have been in their (or various) roles for some years. Special thanks go to Julie Ganner AE who is standing down from the committee after many years in a number of roles, particularly as branch president. Also standing down from the committee are Dr Kai Jensen AE and Paul Anderson who, as our presentations coordinator and newswriter respectively (though both have also taken on other tasks), have both “worked wonders” over recent years bringing events and news to members. Well-deserved thanks go to Kai and Paul.

We hope to see many members on 6 August for the ABM and the speaker presentation that follows.

Mid-year dinner

By Emmanuelle Botté

The annual winter dinner for Editors NSW took place on 2 July 2024. We met in a very pleasant setting at the Searock Bar and Grill in Circular Quay in Sydney. The place was not too crowded, which made for lively conversation around the long table. We were 12 attendees this time and, as usual, from very diverse backgrounds. A special thank you to Ruth Power and Anne Edwards for finding the venue. The main dishes pleased everyone (fish, steak or vegetarian curry, we all loved the selections) and the mango panna cotta was not only delicious but colourful. Raffle time is always fun. This year was particularly good, as we all left with a book, for which we thank Allen & Unwin. In addition, some of us won a voucher for a subscription (or renewal) to the Macquarie dictionary online, thanks to Pan Macmillan. As you can see from the pictures, we enjoyed each other’s company, trading tips and sharing experiences at work and in life, thereby nurturing the social cohesion at the heart of IPEd. We are already looking forward to the second annual dinner in December.

A group of people sit around a long table. They are looking towards the camera and smiling. On the table are various glasses and cutlery.
