From the committee

Have you booked yet for the Annual Branch Meeting on Wednesday 7 August at 6.30 pm, online? Thinking it’s just a dry meeting? Think again. The ABM is where our branch committee is put together for the coming year, and the members of the branch committee are what makes Editors Queensland tick. Each committee member performs a specific role, e.g. events coordinator or budget officer. So, the ABM is an important meeting for all members, whether or not you are nominating for a role on the committee. See you there!

AND … don’t forget that at 7 pm on the same evening, author Lee Kofman will be giving a presentation on working with authors. Lee will talk about her dual perspective on the experience of being edited and being an editor, including practical suggestions on how editors can work with authors to help them achieve their best. (You need to book separately for this event.)

Join a team of fellow-editors to fill a number of important roles within Editors Queensland. How about it? Think about one of the following roles:

  • Social events coordinator in Brisbane. You would be helping editors get together in person – we know since COVID how valuable that is. You only need, for example, to decide on a date and venue, fill out a booking form for IPEd, book the venue and check numbers closer to the date. We would love you to do this!
  • Co-organiser of professional development workshops, as part of a supportive team. Editors Queensland aims to present two such workshops per year. Your team would, with the help of the whole branch committee, identify suitable topics and speakers, and organise the events, which are generally online. You would also have the support of IPEd’s Standing Committee on Professional Development (SCPD), whose meetings you may attend.

Please get in touch if you are interested in either of these positions. You won’t be sorry! Contact Glenine at edqld.president@iped-editors.org.

News from the Editors Queensland Sunshine Coast Group

Eight Sunshine Coast editors came together for a lively lunch in Yandina on 5 July for our quarterly meeting. Gun Cotton Coffee Roasters was a great place to enjoy food and conversation with our fellow editors on a rainy Friday afternoon in winter. We were happy to have Branch President Glenine Hamlyn AE join us again, along with new and returning IPEd members to welcome. One of our regular members, Kathy Box from Gympie, announced her upcoming retirement to the well wishes of all.

Our next gathering will be a dinner and trivia night at 6.30pm on Wednesday 9 October 2024 at the North Shore Tavern, David Low Way, Pacific Paradise. We’d love you to join us if you’re in the area – come and help win a few points on your favourite topics at this good-natured competition! To set the scene, consider what’s the best collective noun for a group of editors taking on the trivia challenge (see https://allcollectivenouns.com/people/collective-noun-for-editors)? RSVP to Lisa Hill by 2 October at edqld.sunshine@iped-editors.org.
