IPEd

From the Standing Committee on Professional Development

Do you have a passion for learning, sharing knowledge, and tackling change in our industry? Would you like to help IPEd deliver training workshops to support our members and advance the profession?

The Standing Committee on Professional Development (SCPD) is currently recruiting new members and volunteers. This is a great time to join as we prepare our 2025 program, look forward to a face-to-face conference, and address training needs identified by IPEd’s specialist working parties. That coming work includes training around accessibility (Books without barriers) and the new IPEd Standards, and collaborating with our new working parties on diversity, equity and inclusion, and AI.

First-time volunteers and newcomers to the industry are encouraged to consider these roles. IPEd is committed to providing PD for, and representing, our broad membership. That ranges from new editors starting out to skilled professionals honing their craft and specialisations. It includes those working in-house, freelancing, in a job that involves occasional editing, and still studying.

You will be working with an experienced and collegial team, currently made up of branch professional development (PD) and events officers, and chaired by IPEd’s PD director, Stephanie Holt AE. You’ll also work closely with the specialist editors who provide our training. And of course, you get to attend the workshops you volunteer with for free.

We are looking for:

SCPD members (two positions)

This role would suit IPEd members with some experience in training or education (not necessarily of editors), and a passion for PD.

You will attend subcommittee meetings, currently held on a Monday evening (AEST/AEDT) every six weeks for no more than two hours. You will also help develop and deliver two or three workshops each year, based on your interest and availability, with input, support and resourcing from SCPD.

SCPD tech support volunteers

This role would suit members who are comfortable with Zoom and online learning, and who would enjoy supporting the PD program.

You will receive an introduction to IPEd’s Zoom workshop delivery, and join a roster of volunteers. You would be expected to support three or four workshops or presentations a year, attending the event itself and a tech briefing/rehearsal. Your tasks would vary, but could include noting attendance, monitoring the chat, managing breakout rooms and answering tech queries from attendees. While it’s not a requirement, you would be welcome to attend SCPD meetings as a guest if you are keen for greater involvement in SCPD’s work.

Please contact Stephanie Holt (PD director) on chair.scpd@iped-editors.org for more information or email an expression of interest that briefly notes your interest and relevant knowledge or experience.
