IPEd has completed the first of a series of surveys to seek feedback about the initial effects of COVID-19 on IPEd members and their employment, editing work and other related activities.
The information will be used as part of IPEd’s ongoing support and advocacy for members and the industry. Later IPEd will introduce targeted surveys about short-term and long-term financial effects.
The survey was distributed via email to all members on 14 April 2020, with a closing date of 28 April 2020. The survey was completed by 235 respondents.

The survey concluded with a request for contact details of anyone prepared to provide de-identified case studies about the effects COVID-19 has had on them, as editors and individuals. The case studies will aim to provide concrete examples of the impacts on the mental, physical, financial, social and familial circumstances that editors are experiencing. Fourteen IPEd members have volunteered their details and we thank them for their support.
Information from the Australian Government’s Department of Health about some support services available for those experiencing distress during these times is available here.
If any members are having difficulty paying membership or Editors Directory fees, IPEd’s Administration and Board Secretariat Officer, Nicole Mathers, is here to help. We are grateful for her offer to connect with anyone who is feeling isolated and needs someone to talk to.
Nicole has specific skills in community social support through her work with Wyndham City Council in Victoria. Although not a counsellor, Nicole has received training with internal and external psychologists in Youth Services and Aged and Disability in the social support area. She can offer a safe, confidential space to discuss any concerns or just to touch base for a regular chat to stay connected.
