November 2023
Vol. 4 No. 10 | ISSN: 2652-5836
Welcome to the November issue of Gatherings.
This month we have some insights into the value of accreditation exam preparation workshops, and an update on the Standards – they’ll be with members soon for feedback!
Applications are now open for the 2024 Residential Editorial Program (REP). IPEd will support one scholarship position for the REP, so don’t delay, and get your application in. Read more about that below.
We have an update from the Accessibility Initiative Working Party (AIWP), including some insight into the wide impact of Books without barriers, plus news from the Standing Committee on Professional Development.
Also this month, we have:
- a recap of a great EdNSW event about working with government, which includes some useful tips.
- a recap of the successful launch of Dr Renée Otmar’s Editing for sensitivity, diversity and inclusion: A guide for professional editors, which was hosted by EdVic.
- a report on an EdsQ event about editing and AI.

A week in the life…
What’s the week in the life of an editor look like? Depends on the editor!
This great series from our friends at the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) explores various types of editing work through the regular weeks of their members.
Most recently, Derek Philip-Xu shared a week in their life as an ELT editor and project manager while Becky Grace shared a week in her life as a children’s fiction editor and proofreader specialising in middle grade and YA fiction.
Member milestones
We’re excited to share that IPEd members Charlotte Cottier AE and Dr Rhonda Daniels AE have two chapters – “‘Please can you proofread my thesis?’ Exploring initial student enquiries for thesis editing in Australia” and “Providing guidance to professional editors on editing theses: The Australian experience” in the forthcoming book Proofreading and editing in student and research publication contexts: international perspectives, which will be published in March 2024.
Congratulations to IPEd member, Gillian Gregory whose book From the shadows: The story of Eliza Cash was recently published! The book launch will be held on Saturday 11 November at Ballarat Mechanics Institute.
And congratulations to IPEd member Mary O’Callaghan who celebrated 15 years as an accredited editor this year!
