Expanded scope for IPEd Student Prize
The IPEd Student Prize is awarded annually to enhance the profession of editing by supporting student work on issues in editing and publishing.
In past years, the IPEd Student Prize of $250 was restricted to a student essay or paper. To reflect the breadth of contemporary editing and publishing courses, IPEd has significantly expanded the objectives, criteria and eligibility.
The Standing Committee on Awards and Prizes (SCAP) consulted with the sector, surveying editing course coordinators and inviting them to respond with ideas that better represent the innovative and practical work their students undertake.
As in previous years, student essays and papers will be eligible for the prize but we have significantly expanded the criteria to include:
- digital or print publishing project (including group work)
- report to publisher or publishing proposal
- manuscript assessment
- article for newspaper/trade publication/website
- blog post
- video or multimedia project
- website
- essay
- other student work that fulfils the objective of the IPEd Student Prize.
The prize is open to students in an editing or publishing degree or other discipline with a focus on editing and is no longer restricted to postgraduate courses.
In contrast to previous years, students may submit work directly. Further information and the revised entry form is available on the IPEd website.
IPEd will send flyers to course coordinators to remind them about the prize and the expanded criteria. Entries open on 15 October 2020 and close on 30 November 2020. We will call for expressions of interest for judges from 1 October 2020.
The winner of the IPEd Student Prize gains valuable career recognition among editors and the editing profession through:
- acknowledgement as the IPEd Student Prize winner on the IPEd website and in the IPEd newsletter, which is circulated to 1300 members across Australia and New Zealand
- mention on IPEd social media channels
- recognition at the biennial IPEd editors conference to be held in Hobart on 28–30 June 2021
- the opportunity, if appropriate, to share their project with IPEd members on the IPEd website
- possible mention in media targeting publishers, authors and editors
- acknowledgement in an announcement to publishers, writers centres and other IPEd stakeholders.
The university that the winning student attended will also gain valuable exposure and recognition through the above. IPEd is open to negotiating further promotional opportunities for the course taken by the IPEd Prize winner.
